Having political discussions and debates in the wrong place can be a good way to make casual friends into lifelong enemies. I would not say that you cannot find a good political discussion where you can talk articulately about the issues without getting heated, but you need to make sure that the people there are into it. Political debates are notorious for causing hurt feelings, raised voices, and occasional acts of violence. Although debating politics is a good way for us to test our beliefs and strengthen our convictions while hearing what other people are saying, it will never be a very good substitute for small talk.

When I want to talk politics, I usually find a good political message board on the Internet. The great thing about political message boards is that they are real Internet communities. You can find all sorts of people there who like to have political discussions. There are some trolls who go there to do nothing but cause fights and irritate people, but there are also plenty of folks with sincere political convictions who simply enjoy talking to people with differing views. Some of these conversations take the shape of political debates, of course, but more often they have a constructive aspect as well. Usually, there is at least a little bit of common ground for a political discussion to stand on. And when there is common ground, there is the hope of building a greater consensus in the future.

Of course, political discussions do sometimes have an aspect of preaching to the converted. Sometimes it’s nice to find a good political bulletin board dedicated to your own personal beliefs and convictions to hang out at. This is especially true if you live in an area that is not traditionally friendly to your sort of believers. I had a friend who lived way down south but was a liberal political thinker. When he would try to get into political discussions at bars, it would never end well. It would inevitably lead to an argument, and sometimes it would get pretty rough. When he started having online political talks, however, things got better for him. He could leave political discussions for the Internet, and simply talk about areas of common cause with friends. That way, he can avoid conflicting with people he cared about.

No matter what your political ideology, however, sometimes it gets to the point where you really do need to talk to the people around you. Especially with the issues our country is facing right now, sometimes a political chat is just what the doctor ordered. A lot of people go along with what their parents tell them in a sort of mechanical fashion, not really questioning political beliefs they have been brought up with. It can be worthwhile to show the people an alternate perspective in times of crisis.
